As your trusted bearings supplier, we make it our mission to keep our valued stakeholders informed about matters related to our line of work. In this case, we would like to update you on the counterfeit epidemic transpiring in our country at present.

Counterfeit Case – August 2020

In August 2020 we were informed of a counterfeit bearing seizure by SAPS that took place at an independent bearing supplier. From the available information so far it appears that this could be South Africa’s largest seizure of counterfeit bearings to date.

A tip-off was received about a bearing supplier in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, believed to be stocking and supplying counterfeit bearings. Sebenza SAPS lead the investigation, and a search resulted in an estimated R5.6 million worth of Timken, NSK and FAG branded counterfeit products found and seized in the said company’s premises.

Three suspects, who are staff members of the bearing company, appeared in court on criminal charges for dealing in counterfeit goods.

As these components form an imperative part of vehicles, aircraft, trains and critical machinery, failure of such inferior quality parts could have devastating repercussions to human lives and property. It is therefore assuring to know that SAPS continue to support the legitimate bearing industry in SA in preventing illegal counterfeiting operations.

We will keep you, our customer, informed of developments in this case and any other cases in the future as we believe such counterfeit products are highly damaging and the more awareness we can create the more equip bearing users are to detect and prevent such products from being used in their operations.

Your Trusted Bearings Supplier

Bearings 2000 fully understands the financial pressure our customers and other South African bearing consumers are currently experiencing as a result of the National Lockdown.

As saving on costs right now is a priority,  the risk of unknowingly purchasing counterfeit bearings could pose additional risks  and subsequently additional costs in the long term.

We suggest instead to communicate with us, your trusted bearing supplier, to work out mutually beneficial cost saving measures as opposed to sourcing cheaper components from untrustworthy suppliers.
